New book pays tribute to inspiring musician

ValerieJeffries_Cover_WEBDown to the Key Bed is a celebration of the life of Geraldine Harrison, who taught piano and musicianship in Kent and London from the 1970s until months before her death in 2010. Her terrific flair, knowledge, expertise and care for all her pupils left an impression in their hearts as well as Distinctions in their exams. The secret of Geri’s success was her 20 years’ experience on the international concert platform, and that’s what Valerie Jeffries has written about, alongside Geri’s exhilarating life in Canada, Paris, London, and then Whitstable. Many successful pupils now in Kent, London, and wider Europe, remember the magnificent music room where she gave them something noble even beyond her great musicianship.

Valerie Jeffries is a science writer used to oysters and evolution, but she was inspired to record Geri’s life having known and admired her since 1983. Val’s daughter Helen took piano lessons with Geraldine Mason Harrison from age 4, accumulating all the grades, certificates, and then an Oxford music degree. The book is extensively illustrated and uplifting, taking you into the music and the soul of a great lady.

Down to the Key Bed is available from two Kent bookshops: Bowstring Books, Faversham (01795 229 263) and Harbour Books, Whitstable (01227 264011).

The book costs £10 and half the cost will go Leeds University  Footsteps Fund, which supports students with inadequate means to pursue their studies. This will help fulfil Geraldine Harrison’s wish to help  music students from poorer backgrounds.
